In Search of the Oregon Coast Dungeness Crab

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Tony Thomas Catching Dungeness on the Oregon Coast is a year-round sport in the estuaries, coastal rivers and tidal bays. In the ocean, crab season is closed from August 15th through November 30th. The best weather to go in is mild to sunny weather. Sustained rains bring fresh water. They are salt-water creatures and heavy rains force them out to sea because of the sudden lack of salt water. To stay on the right side of the law, you need to get yourself a license if you are 14 and over. The licenses are not that expensive (call the local chamber of commerce for prices) and they are available for three day or year long. This is for both in-state and out-of-state residents. Legally, you can only keep the males. The females must be let go. You can determine a male from a female by checking their underside. Males have thin tail-like piece while the females have a round, wide piece. It’s pretty easy to tell them apart once you see them both. The measurement of the crab will also determine a keeper. As long as the male crab measures five and three forths inches across the back of the shell, not including the points, consider him dinner! Now, the adventure begins! Crabs are usually caught by using crab rings or crab pots. You can have up to three of these devices per person. Lower the baited (use chicken, fish, turkey, etc) rings or pots into the water, wait about 5 - 7 minutes, pull them up and see what you have. If you come up empty handed, move them to a different spot and try again. The ideal spots are ones with very little current. You can leave the crab pots in the water for a bit longer than the rings. The local bait shops in town will be able to hook you up with the gear you need. Once caught, they need to be cooked as soon as possible, preferably within the hour. The catch limit is 12 per day. Once you taste a juicy, Dungeness crab, you will think you have died and went to heaven! Traits Of Successful Relationships

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Tim Connor A few weeks ago in my weekly relationship tip, I asked my subscribers to consider some self development relationship questions. I received a number of responses people asking me my opinion of the necessary traits of successful relationships. So here they are and in no particular order of importance. - The ability to get past the infatuation stage quickly. - Realistically managing your expectations of your partner. - Continuing to work on your own self-esteem. - Letting go of old baggage at least once a week. - Having a similar life outlook. - The willingness to accept that there are other ways of looking at things than your own. - Staying focused on what is right, positive and good about your relationship. - Maintaining your own identity. - Taking responsibility for your share of the relationship successes as well as issues. - Keeping you ego out of the relationship entirely. - Not seeing the behaviors of your partner that you dont like as faults. - Not invalidating your partner in any way either in public or private. - Avoiding emotional game playing. - Having a safe emotional environment. - Keeping the romance alive. - Having some common goals. - Being able to talk about money issues without getting defensive or in a blame mode. - Spending adequate time together. - The ability to have honest, open and vulnerable sharing of feelings, needs, fears, dreams, hopes and frustrations. - Having a sex life that is fulfilling and satisfying. - Doing something fun together at least once a week. - Similar spiritual values. - Managing differences in a positive way. - Maintaining a high level of trust and respect. I will guarantee that you can add an item or two to this list. It is by all means not the end all in successful relationship traits or behaviors. But it is a start. If you have most of these Ill guarantee you are well on your way to a long and mutually nurturing and reward life with your partner. No relationship is without stress, problems or frustrations. The key to success is to develop systems or routines for disarming these before they tear away at the fabric of your relationship. Facial Bone Surgery

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Michael Russell The premaxillary portion of the facial bones (the upper jaw) just below the nose may protrude or recede too much for an attractive appearance. While some correction can be obtained from an orthodontist, if the malocclusion is severe, maxilloplasty, the surgical recession or advancement of the bone itself, may be advisable. This surgery needs extensive care than most cosmetic surgery procedures. While it does in fact improve the patient’s appearance, maxilloplasty does not generally come under the heading of cosmetic surgery. Rather, it is sometimes considered reconstructive surgery because of its function, namely, proper occlusion of the teeth, is nearly always involved. Severe malocclusion may also be corrected by mandibuloplasty, the resetting or advancing of the mandibular (lower jaw) bone. Frequently, the addition of bone, cartilage, or some type of silicone implant is used to bring the chin forward to achieve better facial balance. This surgery is often performed in conjunction with a rhinoplasty, making possible the use of the bone and cartilage removed from the nose for the reconstruction of the chin. As an additional procedure accompanying a face lift, it is especially valuable to the individual whose chin has receded excessively because of the premature loss of the lower teeth. Chin surgery (mentoplasty) is undertaken under local anesthesia unless it is necessary to obtain bone from some other part of the body. The incision is made either inside the mouth or just beneath the chin, where the scar will be inconspicuous. The incision beneath the chin is used for the removal of excess bone to reduce an excessively long or prominent chin. After the operation, the patient is limited to a soft diet for about ten days. While complications are rare, a nerve may be damaged, producing numbness and lack of mobility of the lower lip either temporarily or in rare instances permanently. Another postoperative complication may be the deviation (separation or slippage) of the material inserted. This is corrected by a secondary adjustment. The appearance of some women is enhanced by malarplasty, the augmentation of the molar eminence of the cheekbone. Bone or block silicone is inserted to achieve greater prominence of the cheekbone. The incision may be made in the mouth, through the lower eyelid, or behind the hairline in the area above the ear. A pocket for the insertion of the implant is created by separating the overlying tissue from the bone beneath. If the inserted material drifts, it may create a grotesque effect. In thin individuals, it may be apparent on close inspection. Six months after surgery, recovery is usually complete and the maximum effect on appearance is attained. Of course, there are individual variations due to heredity, age, quality of the skin and general health. At that time, additional minor surgical correction may indicated in order to achieve optimum results. In the 40 to 50 age group, the time at which this surgery is most commonly undertaken, both the skin and the underlying adipose (fatty) tissue have already begun to lose their elasticity. The facial and cranial bones have began to decrease in size. For these reasons, among others, not all wrinkles can be removed and a face lift should not be undertaken with that expectation. The Bayou Doughnut

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Della Franklin New Orleans is famous for many things including jazz music, and Mardi Gras to name a few. There are so many attractions in the bayou that it can be hard to try all the things you want in the short time you are there. Many people have to take several, or even dozens of trips to get their New Orleans adventures accomplished. One stop everyone should make when visiting New Orleans is the bakery. Not any bakery though, it has to be one that sells beignets, the sweet baked treat that is part bread, part doughnut. The beignet has been a staple of New Orleans cuisine for decades, but it hasnt yet enjoyed widespread consumption. In fact, it is a major challenge to find beignets for purchase outside Louisiana. There are several places around the U.S. that sell beignets, however they are specialty stores that are only located in major cities and have small selections of these baked treats. Absolutely the best way to enjoy a beignet is to travel to New Orleans and go to a local bakery which sells them. There is a tradition in New Orleans to eat beignets with sweet coffee, that the French call caf. The combination of beignets and sweet coffee is as delightful as it is filling. The beignet is deceiving in its looks as a light pastry; it is actually sweet bread that can fill you up in no time at all. The beignet is a world famous pastry with little sales outlets outside of New Orleans, so it should be a must on anyones to-do list when visiting New Orleans. Many websites offer beignet cookbooks, and recipes online, however nothing tastes better then the real thing. Maybe its something in the water, or maybe its just the fresh caf that is brewed to go along side the beignet, but something about eating it in the soul city makes it all the more scrumptious. Intimacy: The Elusive Ingredient in Relationships

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Nick Arrizza, M.D. I’m sure that you know of, or at least have heard of, the importance of intimacy as a critical factor in the success of a relationship. In this article I wish to discuss: 1. My definition of intimacy. 2. Reasons why intimacy is an elusive ingredient in most relationships, and, 3. What one can do to create more intimacy in one’s relationship. Firstly, let me begin with what I mean by intimacy. Very simply it is about one’s ability to remain open and honest with their partner about what they are feeling and thinking. Clearly such a feat is not an easy one for most couples to achieve for reasons which include: 1. Many individuals are often not even aware themselves of what they are thinking and/or feeling. 2. This lack of awareness is often the result of a host of fears of being fully conscious of this information. 3. The fears are often about dredging up uncomfortable feelings about one’s self, one’s past, one’s family, and ones feelings about their partner and so on. 4. There is a general assumption that it is better for all concerned to keep such information suppressed. 5. There is an assumption that by distracting one’s self from this information that it will just disappear. This type of self sabotage often leads to a relationship in which the members of the couple never really get to know each other. When this happens it becomes difficult to be fully one’s self with the other and hence the relationship starts feeling constraining and/or energetically draining after a while. This is because it takes a great deal of energy to keep this uncomfortable information suppressed at an unconscious level. Additionally the relationship will start to feel both unsafe and empty emotionally. Unsafe because each member will not know who they are having a relationship with. Empty because it will be difficult to relax, be one’s self and have a meaningful and fulfilling interchange. In time cracks will emerge in the relationship and cause it to disintegrate. What can be done to head this off at the pass? The solution is to help each individual become more open and comfortable with their own inner emotional life i.e. eradicate the fear of their own inner feelings. It sounds ironic, doesn’t it that the solution to the intimacy issue is really about being honest with one’s self first? If this is something you or your partner are struggling with kindly visit the web link below and consider an introductory consultation. Samsung D900 - Slim Slider

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Martin_Stellis]Martin Stellis Compared to other phones in the Samsung range and its predecessor, the Samsung D900 looks to have taken a handful of diet pills and run a few marathons since the last version was released. This into which a significant number of hours have been invested into the design - and it appears to have paid off. Claimed to be the world’s slimmest slider phone, the D900 designers have come up with a phone with catwalk-acceptable dimensions. The D900 measures in at 103mm x 51mm x 12.9mm and weighs 85 grams - not bad for a slider phone. The curved lines of the phone make it easy to hold, however you may need to keep a tissue handy, since the glossy black finish tends to attract fingerprints and grime. It’s easy to slide open the Samsung D900 handset, which is controlled by a sturdy spring mechanism. There isn’t really a good way to open the phone, except to put your thumb on the screen, which will leave you scrambling for your tissue again. Underneath the cover, there is a keypad with a central five-way navigation panel, two selection buttons, answer and end call keys and a clear button. The keys themselves are almost flat and are easy to press, although they aren’t distinctly separated like on other phone models. The screen is both an impressive size (2.1 inches) and great resolution (240 x 320 pixels). It supports 262K colours, so your photographs will appear vividly and clearly. The screen also acts as the camera viewfinder and does an excellent job of it. At three megapixels, the camera is better than other phones in this class and comes with autofocus, flash and 4 x digital zoom. You can also use the camera to capture MPEG4 videos. Hardly surprising that a phone with supermodel intentions comes with a mirror - use this for self portrait shots. Samsung has introduced a sophisticated new function to the D900 user interface, known as ‘uPlus’. The display of the phone adjusts itself to your environment - during the day your background image will have sunlight, whilst at night, it will fade to a night sky. As you dial a number, a very cute pen and paper appears, writing the numbers as you go. Another handy feature is ‘MobileTracker’ - if you replace the SIM in your phone, an automatic SMS revealing the phone number of the new SIM is sent to a number previously nominated by you. Not a bad feature if someone makes off with your phone. The Samsung D900 also includes Bluetooth with AD2P for music streaming and USB connectivity. The MP3 player is compatible with MP3, AAC, AAC+ and e-AAC+ files, and the player offers shuffle and repeat modes. There isn’t a standard headphone jack on the D900, so you will need to listen to your music using either the Bluetooth headset or the included (not bad quality) ear buds. One of the only problems with this handset is poor battery life - you’ll only squeeze in three hours of talk time with 250 hours on standby and you’ll need to charge the phone on alternate days. This is a seriously slender, good-looking and well-performing phone. Stylish and functional, it would be right at home on any catwalk. Fitness Wars: Revenge of the Girth

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Aaron Potts As of the writing of this article, May 16, 2005, we are all almost 5 months into our New Year’s Resolutions. Are you skinny yet? Did you find your six-pack? Does your butt look like you wanted it to in those jeans? For a lot of you, the answers to these questions are going to be “No, No, and, I took the jeans back to the store”. Why? You are a victim of the Fitness Wars, that’s why. Your Girth is winning out over your Resolution, and you are probably more frustrated now than you were when you started! Is there some master conspiracy that is keeping you from getting in shape? Do the rules of energy in vs. energy out not apply to you? Are you in a fat-loss vacuum where the normal laws of weight loss don’t work? Of course not. Yet, you still can’t lose the bodyfat, and it is likely because you are simply confused. If you are like most people, you have gotten fitness advice from the radio, TV, friends, family members, magazines, maybe even a Personal Trainer. Who had the most to gain from giving you fitness advice? The radio, TV, magazines, and even your trainer are all interested in getting paid for handing out advice to you. Does that make them the most qualified to help you? With the possible exception of your personal trainer, no, it really doesn’t. What about your friends and family? Let’s answer this question first: Was the person who gave you the advice in good shape? If not, then the point of that question should be clear! Fitness Wars - all of these different people and agencies trying to get you to do something or buy something. How about a little thing that some people like to call “Back to Basics”? Prepare Thyself! You are about to be shown the true secrets to fitness success!! 1. Proper Nutrition. For those of you who don’t know what that is, a good rule of thumb is that if man made it, don’t eat it! If that isn’t enough information for you, then consult a professional nutritionist, or do free research online. If you pay a professional, make sure they are properly credentialed. If you do the research yourself, don’t believe what you find if that site is obviously more interested in your money than in your health. 2. Eat 5 to 6 small meals a day. You say that you’ve heard this a thousand times already? Well, that should tell you something - it works! Your body is a calorie burning machine. If you are an average female, you can only burn about 300 calories at a time. An average male can burn about 400. It doesn’t matter how much you exercise - if you eat more than that during any one sitting, some of it is going to be stored as bodyfat. 3. Exercise - at least 60 minutes a day. It doesn’t matter what the magazines say, or what you hear on the “1-Second Abs” commercial, or who tells you anything else. Exercise - at least 60 minutes a day. It bears repeating, so feel free at this time to keep saying it out loud until you feel that you have it memorized. 4. Believe. This final step is really the most important. Most people have self-limiting beliefs. In a nutshell, that means that no matter how much education or assistance that they receive, they don’t BELIEVE that they can lose weight! Let’s see. how does that saying go? “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right!” Believe it can happen, because it can. Then you will be only 3 short steps away from success. Wow, what a revelation this article has been! In fewer words than it takes to list the dozens of unhealthy circumstances and afflictions related to being overweight, you have just been given a guaranteed 4-step system for fitness success! Are you willing to take care of yourself and finally meet those fitness goals, or do you have another 5 months to waste? Do yourself this one small favor. Count to four, beat the Girth, and remember that January 1st is just another day! Working In Iraq: Is It For You?

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Douglas Hanna The US Army Corp of Engineers and numerous private companies are still looking for people to help rebuild Iraq’s infrastructure. In fact, one Web site currently has four pages of jobs in Iraq. And the pay can be very good. Some civilian contractor jobs start at $80,000. Others pay even more. A truck driver earning $30,000 in the US may be able to get a job in Iraq paying $70,000, $80,000 or even $90,000 a year. Iraqi jobs come with tax benefits Just as important, housing and meals are usually provided, and if you work overseas for a year, $80,000 of your income is excluded from US income taxes. (Note: For complete details on this tax exclusion, see Section 13.3 of the IRS Tax Code, Aliens and U.S. Citizens Living Abroad: Foreign Income & Foreign Income Exclusion). Iraq job postings are usually available online and, in many cases, you can apply for these jobs online. Sites you might want to check out include dangerzonejobs.com, jobline.net, and jobsearch.about.com. As of this writing (early Septermber, 2006), I found jobs available for mechanics, subcontract administrators, buyers, pest control technicians, legal advisors, truck drivers, telecommunications people, and maintenance workers — to name just a few. Companies with jobs in Iraq include Halliburton, KBR (a Halliburton subsidiary) Dyncorp, Parsons Project Iraq, CIS (Critical Intervention Services), Titan Corp., Bechtel, Fluor, Koll, Wackenhut, General Dynamics, EG&G Technical Services, and many others. The US State Department is also looking for employees. The Iraq Reconstruction Management Office (IRMO) wants to hire highly skilled and motivated United States citizens. IRMO’s mission is to support the sovereign, democratic rights of the Iraqi people to govern themselves, defend their country, and rebuild their economy. These jobs fall under Civil Service and, as such, offer excellent benefits, including generous health plans, thrift savings plans, life insurance, annual leave, sick leave, and a student loan repayment plan. Iraqi jobs There are a number of positions posted as of this writing that require duty in Iraq. A partial list of these jobs include: Advisor ($62,000 to $97,000), Logistics Program Coordinator ($62,886 TO $97,213), Contract Specialist ($62,886 to $97,213), and Field Services Officer ($62,886 to $97,213). Another branch of the US Government, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), is currently spending $3.3 billion on contracts with consulting firms that help promote entrepreneurism, improve agriculture and manufacturing efficiency, stimulate investment and develop information technology skills. That’s the good news. Here’s the bad news. In an article on the Web site www.dangerzonejobs.com dated Feb. 14, 2005, one recruiter says you’ll be working eight- to 12-hour days in a 120-degree desert populated by scorpions, camel spiders and people looking to kill you. You’ll be dusty and dirty most of the time. You’re shown slides of what your residence — a prefab metal container — looks like when it’s blown apart by mortar fire. You learn that about 60 other company employees or subcontractors have been killed — and one is missing. Still willing Still, 1 in 10 applicants for jobs with the Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root, based in Houston, remain willing to take those well-paying truck driver, food service, laundry and maintenance positions in Iraq. This despite extensive media coverage of the kidnappings, beheadings and suicide attacks on civilian workers there. And there’s no doubt that civilians are prime targets. Besides the roughly 3,200 U.S. military casualties so far, there have been more than 300 casualties among civilians working for U.S. contractors, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Two of the largest contractors staffing for jobs in Iraq, Halliburton and KBR. The big picture is that billions of dollars have been allocated to construction and reconstruction projects throughout Iraq. Salaries are high and the lure of making more money that one could sometimes make in years at home is hard to resist. So, is a job in Iraq right for you? If you have a sense of adventure, are not afraid to take a risk and would like to double or even triple your wages for a year, the answer just might be yes. Do you play golf? If you do and you’d like to reduce your handicap — and have a great vacation — all at the same time, you just can’t beat North or South Carolina. To learn more about golf schools in these two states, including their costs, just go to http://www.topcarolinagolfschools.com. 5 Non-Negotiable Times Your Partner Should Respect You

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Lisa Angelettie There is a trap that many of us fall into because for the most part girls are socialized to be sweet, accommodating, passive, well-mannered etc. When we grow up and get into relationships, many of us don’t really know what to do in response to disrespect. It’s a little like we’re frozen. Shocked. Disappointed. Now What? Well, there is a % of women who will not put up with any form of disrespect in their relationships. One incident and they bail. Probably a good idea. But then there is the rest of us - who either get temporarily outraged or upset, but like a bitter pill - we swallow it and move on. This is NOT a good idea. No matter how many partners you may meet in your lifetime, there should always be at least one requirement - that you are treated with respect from day one until the end. Look for areas of respect when… 1.You are intimate. He should respect your likes and dislikes. 2.You are talking to each other. He shouldn’t speak to you like an angry dad or like you’re an idiot. 3.You are arguing. Even in the heat of battle, you shouldn’t be disrespected. If it gets that heated - someone should walk away. 4.He is around your friends and family. If he doesn’t treat your friends/family with respect, then he doesn’t respect you. They are an extension of you. 5.You are ending it. Even if the relationship is over and there are hurt feelings - he should have enough respect for what you did share to end it or accept the end with class. Quick Tip: You teach others the amount of respect they will pay you. Even your worst enemy will respect you if you demand it. Demand what you are worth everyday.
