What Does it Take To Be Fit?

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Scott Setter Now were hitting the third month in this year and many of you are still going strong in your quest to be fit and healthy. If youve dropped off the wagon because it was too difficult or you didnt see results quick enough, thats okay. Just dust yourself off, tie your laces back up and get back on because its never too late to keep going. You just have to know what path to take so that you can understand and anticipate pitfalls and know how to overcome them. Often I get asked what machine will fix my thighs or how much cardio to shrink my waist or what miracle supplement will make me lose weight, grow 2 inches, do my taxes and give me a pay raise. If you workout in a health club Im sure youve noticed that not everyone there looks like a movie star. Same thing goes for weight loss clinics. Why? Because we get fixated on one thing and go full force until our eyes pop out. Think about it. If low fat is good then fat-free must be better. If 20 minutes on a treadmill is enough then 45 minutes must be better. Instead of going three days a week to the gym, like recommended, Ill go 6 days a week and get burned out faster. See Americas trend? Keep it simple people! Im going to give you the five components if fitness so that you have at least the foundation of the correct path to follow. The rest is up to you. Keep in mind; these are based strictly on science and not my personal creation. The 5 Components of Fitness Food Intake Food intake simply means calories taken in by the body and calories expended by the body. If you take in more calories than your body needs in a typical day, it will store the rest for later. If we do this day after day then, guess what, we get fat! Likewise for the opposite. If we take in less then our body needs then over time we will lose weight. There are no fattening and unfattening foods. There are only healthy and unhealthy foods, remember that! Now jot this down, like I said earlier many people will read this and start cutting out all their calories to lose weight, no-no. If you restrict yourself to too little calories then your body will fight for survival and the only weight youll lose will be hard earned lean muscle. Ill go more into this later. Obviously theres more to it than this, but I want you to keep it simple for now and learn the basics. Stop fad dieting and learn what foods satisfy you and how you can eat them and still lose weight. Your goal, if it is to lose weight, should be to slightly lower your daily calories enough to still feel satisfied yet still lose weight. Cardio respiratory Exercise Been on a treadmill? Walked the dog in the neighborhood? Been into a kick boxing class lately? Congratulations, you are participating in cardio respiratory exercise and your heart loves you for it! Cardio (for short) is very important for the heart and lungs. It makes your heart stronger and reduces your risk of heart disease and many other chronic problems associated with being unhealthy. Cardio breathes life into your circulatory system, it makes your joints more fluid and flexible and also helps you to not get winded walking up the stairs anymore. So how does cardio play into the five components here? Simply put, you burn more calories. Youve created a slight deficit before by consuming less calories and now your creating an even bigger calories deficit by doing cardio. Again, dont go hog wild and jump on a treadmill now for 60 minutes six times a week. Your goal here is to burn extra calories and if you start at too high of a level, then when your body adapts you have nowhere to go but up. Learn what frequency, intensity, time and type is right for you and get started. Food Supplementation Okay, now were eating a little less, were burning some extra calories so everything is going great right? Not yet. Now youre at a point where your taking in less calories and your body is requiring more of them. So whats the big deal? Your starving your body from vital nutrients it needs to get you to your goal! Not to worry. You can remedy this little problem by a process called food supplementation. This gives you those nutrients your body is thirsting for without all the extra calories. Anyone take a multi-vitamin? How about a calcium support? Should I even ask about an anti-oxidant? You need these nutrients and supplements give you what you need without any excess calories, nice huh?Note: not all supplements are created equal. You need to know what supplements are the purest and most potent so that you arent wasting your money and time. Ask a professional what is best for you. Resistance Training Want a little icing on the cake? Component 4 is your ticket. Now that you understand the previous three let me explain why resistance training is so important. Muscles burn the most calories at rest essentially making them a fat burning machine. Also, you store many of your vital nutrients in your muscles. So it makes sense to build lean muscle mass to better aid in fat metabolism and proper nutrition. Now speaking to the women out there, if you are afraid or unsure of weight training, seek professional fitness help and get over your fear. If youre telling me that weight training makes you big and bulky then Ill tell you that your eating way too much and that growth is not muscle but fat and Ill prove it!Just so I can clear the air, we are all body builders. This term is not reserved just for the big, massive bulls out there. We are all building a better body and our bodies will always be under construction until the day we die. Personal Assistance You get sick and need to go to the doctor. He tells you that you need to have your gallbladder taken out. You say great, I think I can do this on my own because I read about it in Time magazine Sound familiar? Of course not! You do what the doctor tells you because he is a professional. Why then is health and fitness not treated the same way? Yes, I know there are a lot of shady characters out there that proclaim to be fitness professionals and they give us all a bad name, but its still important to get proper assistance. This is your body, dont waste your time, health and money on what you read in some article or saw on the Oprah show. You need the above components customized just for you and you definitely need assistance to ensure that what you are doing is safe and effective. Treat your fitness goals like a trip to the doctor. Get the correct information the first time to create a lifetime of health and wellness without the frustration. You are your biggest investment! Talk to you soon. The Zone Diet Reviewed

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Rebecca Chan Barry Sears authors popular books talking about a diet that recommends hormonal thinking rather than caloric thinking as a way to eat. The concept is that the evolution of the human body tells us that the when people consume the correct ratio of carbohydrate to protein to fat (40/30/30) they are healthier, happier and wiser overall. The “40/30/30″ refers to the ratio of calories obtained daily from carbohydrates, proteins and fats respectively. Studies have shown that this ration can result in weight loss.Sears says The Zone is ideal hormone balance. We need to be careful about our insulin levels making sure they remain balanced, not too high or too low. When in the zone, the body does not waste time storing excess calories as fat. Essentially Sears believes that low-fat diets will increase insulin and cause the body to store more fat. He points out that even though Western diets are filled with low-fat carbs, people are fatter than ever. The Zone Diet proclaims that fat consumption is necessary for burning fat. Certain fats will produce the fullness feeling and help determine the rate carbs are taken into the bloodstream. The slower carb absorption will also lower insulin levels and, thus, creates less stored fat. The resulting higher insulin levels make us feel tired. Your body metabolism will slow down and cause cravings for high-carb snacks. The Zone Diet says we create the trap of cravings that continues the cycle indefinitely. The Zone Diet says that people eat too many carbohydrates that create far too much insulin for the body to handle efficiently. This causes a number of health problems including arthritis, cancer and heart disease. The Zone Diet argues that a diet low in carbs and higher in protein along with lower fat consumption will create a zone that is optimal for human life. The problem according to The Zone Diet is that the human body is unable to store fat and burn fat at the same time. The Zone Diet tells its readers to eat every something every five hours during the day. It calls for the elimination of the foods everyone knows are problematic (chips, candy, starch). The Zone Diet highly recommends eating vegetables, lean proteins, lentils and nuts. These are the low glycemic healthy foods. It is not surprising that The Zone Diet does perform for its adherents as it is actually low in calories. The sample meal plans call for fewer than 1500 calories intake per day. Sears says the low-carb diets, like Atkins, miss the target. These diets produce water loss quickly and the dieter thinks he is losing fat. The Zone Diet Dos and Donts Carbohydrates are bad. These include rice, muffins, pastries, chocolate, candy bars, sugar, preserves, pasta, and breakfast cereals. Fruits and vegetables are good. In addition, skinless chicken, turkey and fish are recommended for most meals. Most fruit and vegetables are allowed. Low-fat protein-rich foods such as skinless chicken, turkey and fish should be eaten with every meal. Meanwhile, eating fewer foods that contain saturates and choosing foods that are rich in monounsaturates, such as olive oil, avocado and nuts, is recommended. Think about the value of eating fruits and vegetables instead of, say, one 650 calorie McDonalds burger for lunch. If you eat a light salad with 100 calories and an apple with 60 calories for lunch that will reduce your calorie intake at least 450 calories per day. Over a year that could be 40 pounds!Weight loss: Following The Zone Diet religiously you can expect to lose over five pounds in the first two weeks and after that, about 1.5 pounds per week. Problems with the Zone Diet The instructions are complex. You will need to buy scales and spoons to do it right. Some fiber foods are not allowed like wholegrain cereals. Cheese, in limited portions, can be very healthful. The Food Blocks recommended by The Zone Diet make it nearly impossible to dine out at a restaurant. What fun is that? This plan is just too complicated. The Zone Diet is not recommended by the American Heart Association because it lacks recommends high-protein consumption and it lacks required nutrients. Exhibition Stands and Trade Show Booths

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Charles Ferrars Trade shows have long been established as a favored way to feature and display your companys products in front of buyers from existing, new and potential customers. Buyers do not have much time, they have an agenda and want to see as much of the trade show as possible. It is, therefore, imperative that you make a good first impression. This is where having visually pleasing exhibition stands is a must they must be eye-catching to instantly capture the buyers attention. Exhibition stands come in all shapes, sizes and forms; from leaflet dispensers to pop-up stands and standing at around 2.2m high, a pop up exhibition stand can make an impressive feature in any display area. Most good suppliers offer an in-house design and print service that will allow you to customize the exhibition stands to your own specifications. As a result your booth should be able to stand out from the other exhibitors and provide you with a professional backdrop proudly, or subtlety, portraying your corporate identity with the use of color, graphics and logos. To further enhance the look and usability of your trade booth there are a wide range of exhibition stands, display boards and accessories available that combine both traditional and new, innovative materials. Plinths, podiums and workstations, with circular or square work tops, being some of the more popular accessories. These should all help you engage a buyers attention and draw them into your stand for further investigation, after all that is one of the major goals at trade shows: to gather potential leads so you can follow up at a later date. You should also not that, when not in use many modern exhibition stands have space-saving features that allow them to condense down and fit into wheeled transit cases that can easily into the boot of a car. All of which goes to make exhibitions stands a versatile yet powerful marketing and promotional tool that can make your booth stand out from the crowd and pull in the customers! Trade Show Exhibit Displays

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Steve Valentino The company’s objectives, budget, and corporate branding determine the choice of a trade show exhibit display. The basic purpose of a trade show exhibit display is to attract attention, provoke the attendee to ask questions and create impressions that last. There are different display options available in the market today. Some common types of displays available in today are Pop Ups, panel displays, modular exhibits, truss systems, and custom exhibits. Pop ups are the most popular display option for 10X10 spaces. An ordinary pop-up can be converted into an outstanding display with accessories like shelving, counters, literature displays and many others. Panel displays are a sensible alternative to pop-ups. They can provide a more sophisticated look than a pop-up. Panel displays are generally stronger, and hold more weight than pop-ups. They work well when you have heavier products to display, or a number of computer monitors. Modular exhibits, on the other hand, provide a custom-built look and make use of expensive material. They too hold more weight, and can also be used to hold large LCD panels or plasma screens. They can be used for mounting lighting, projectors, and plasma screens or LCD panels. Truss systems are often used in combination with other display structures like pop-ups and panel displays. Custom exhibits are the best trade show exhibits. These create a wider impact on the audience. These displays are tailor-made to meet the specific image that a company requires. But keeping in mind the high costs of designing, construction, installation and dismantling (I&D), and shipping, these exhibits are suitable for companies having a higher-end budget like $40,000 or more. The dividends in a custom exhibit can be huge, since they instantly set you in a class way above your competitors. Choosing the right tradeshow displays gives businesses an effective tool for communication. What To Get Your Father on His Special Day

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By John Gibb Its Fathers Day soon, and youre not sure what to get? Dont worry yourself about it here are a few ideas to get you thinking. Just as Mothers Day wildly increased sales of flowers, Fathers Day has done the same for ties. While they might seem clichd, ties are the number one Fathers Day present, and its easy to see why. There are thousands and thousands of different tie designs to choose from, making it easy to find a unique one for your father that reflects his personality and really stands out from the crowd. If you get a tie together with a nice shirt, you can make a matching set, which shows that you put some thought into your present. Socks are another good Fathers Day gift, especially if you can find some with an amusing design. Some other popular gifts are tools and electronics. If your dad is the handy sort, theyre bound to appreciate things like power tools, while if theyre a little more nerdy (and you have the money for it), something like an iPod can be a great gift. For the sporty father, equipment like golf clubs, tennis rackets and fishing lures can be a good choice of course, it depends which sport your dad likes. If your dad is into pipes and cigars, those can be a very good idea as well. Basically, just tailor the present to his interests, and you wont go far wrong even if those interests are a little strange! One thing that people sometimes dont think of is skipping the present, and just going out and doing something with their dad. Whether its taking him to see a film or going to a restaurant together, its bound to be appreciated. Beyond that, you could try making something. Childrens homemade cards are always very special. Or you could just get him some beer, or wine. For many fathers, thats the best gift of all. Unwanted Facial Hair Removal: The Top 6 Methods

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Mike Jones The top 6 unwanted facial hair removal methods are: Electrolysis Laser Hair Removal Waxing Or Sugaring Depilatories Hair Growth Inhibitors Tweezers Shaving is not in the list as it can cause stubble which many women find quite unacceptable. Here is a brief overview of each method: Electrolysis This is regarded as the only true permanent method for unwanted facial hair removal. Each hair follicle is treated with an electric current which destroys the follicle’s ability to form new hair. There is mild discomfort and a qualified practitioner can do much to alleviate the anxiety and minimize the pain. 4 to 10 hours may be required to treat the upper lip and 2 to 12 hours for the chin depending on how much hair growth there is. Quotes range from $25 to $100 per hour so the total cost for the upper lip can be anywhere between $100 to $1,000 and between $50 and $1,200 for the chin area. Laser Hair Removal Laser is often regarded as a permanent unwanted facial hair removal method although there can be regrowth. Pulsed light is used to cover many hair follicles at a time and so the cost is obviously less than electrolysis. The upper lip can be treated in less than 1 minute and the chin in 2 to 3 minutes. 3 to 8 treatments may be necessary and a typical cost would be around $500 per hour. Thorough consultations with the practitioner are necessary to establish whether this method will work for you. It is a good idea to have a test done on an area of skin not so visible. Waxing Or Sugaring This method of unwanted facial hair removal is extremely popular as it is quite inexpensive and easy to do at home. Numerous waxing or sugaring kits are available on the market, some with ingredients to soothe the skin and minimize redness, especially appropriate for the facial areas. Wax adheres to the hair and skin whereas sugar pastes adhere only to the hair. When the strip is pulled back there is less pain with sugaring. Also many natural sugaring pastes are available so the skin is not so affected as with the chemicals in some waxing preparations. Results may last for 3 to 6 weeks depending on the individual and rate of hair growth. Depilatories This is another very popular method of unwanted facial hair removal, again because it is very inexpensive and easy to do at home. Care should be exercised however as depilatories contain strong chemicals which dissolve the hair and there may be skin reactions. It is wise to test a small area first on a not so visible part of the body. Be careful to observe the instructions to the letter, especially the time recommended so as to avoid burning the skin. Results can last up to 2 weeks or so. Hair Growth Inhibitors While hair growth inhibitors do not remove hair, they are included in this list as they can have a great effect on the rate of hair growth. Two popular hair growth inhibitors are Vaniqa and Kalo. Vaniqa is a prescription cream especially formulated for unwanted facial hair removal methods. When massaged into the skin twice a day the user will notice a difference in hair growth within about 2 months. As the amount of hair regrowth slows it becomes much easier to remove with other methods such as waxing, sugaring, tweezing, or threading. Vaniqa should only be used by women and girls over the age of 12. It doesn’t work for everyone - about 58% of women in the clinical trials noticed a reduction in hair growth. Kalo is a natural herbal lotion which can work for men and women and even children. When massaged into the skin it begins to disable the mechanism of hair growth in the hair follicle. The hair that regrows is finer and easier to remove. In some cases, after a few months, hardly any hair regrows at all. See the resource box at the end of this article for further information on Vaniqa and Kalo. Tweezers A quality pair of tweezers is needed to perform unwanted facial hair removal properly without risk of taking out chunks of skin as well. Use a magnifying mirror in good light and be sure to pull the hair in the direction of the growth. If you perform this procedure after a bath or shower you will find it easier. Just rub an ice cube over the area afterwards to reduce redness and irritation. Unwanted facial hair removal needn’t be a great problem for women concerned about facial hair. If you are prepared to pay a larger one time fee you can have a permanent solution using electrolysis or laser hair treatment. On the other hand, perhaps using waxing, sugaring, tweezing, or depilatories suits you due to the convenience of doing them at home at little cost. Added to that, combining a hair growth inhibitor with whichever unwanted facial hair removal method you use will reduce the number of times you have to give it attention. Cappuccino: Monk’s Hood or Just Good?

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Marjorie Dorfman “Wake Up And Smell The Cappuccino!” ~ The Dorfman Archives The two years I spent in Italy in the 1970s marked in some ways the best times of my life. I was a student in a small Umbrian city, (Perugia, where they make all that wonderful candy that does all those not so wonderful things to your teeth, but who cares). There I learned more from living each day than I ever gleaned from any version of Dantes Inferno and/ or Paradiso. The ways of the world are universal; the human element uniting all of us with a common thread. Italian men, however, represent a particular work in progress I shall call the Peacock Syndrome. I wish to acknowledge that this condition is often found in men of all ethnic backgrounds, persuasions and nationalities as well, but in smaller degrees. (Women, Italian and otherwise, have other problems). My point will be illustrated with a picture that hopefully will neither need one thousand words nor ignite the cosmopolitan masculine world against me. I will never forget a February morning in Perugia when I spied from my warm perch a young Italian man sipping an expresso at a caf on the towns main street, Corso Vanucci. (Maybe it was really anti-freeze he was drinking. Who knows?) Anyway, it was a memorable sight because he was seated directly opposite me, but OUTSIDE, despite the freezing temperatures and chopping winds that ripped through the tablecloth. Still, the handsome devil wore no coat. His shirt was open down to his waist as if it were high August. Was he not the proud peacock showing off so that passing women could not fail to notice the multitude of virile hairs (peacock feathers) that had frozen upon his chest? That image has never left me, nor has my love for Italian culture and cappuccino, that frothy confection of milk and expresso topped with whipped cream and sprinkled with cinnamon! My adventures in this charming city were not limited to Italian men, although I did experience la Dolce Vita in my own particular way. My sense of bad timing originated here where I tasted my first cappuccino some three weeks before I had to return to America. The latteria (dairy store) was hidden behind a small narrow street (calle) that I discovered one day completely by accident. To make things worse, it was the best cappuccino I ever tasted. The cream was scrumptious and I often had two or three cappuccinos in one sitting just to down some more of it. I even commented to a fellow student that I would have done just as well plastering the contents directly onto my hips and thighs instead of drinking it, as that was where it was headed anyway! Where did this wonderful beverage come from? Coffee originated in the Ottoman Empire and was first introduced to the West by Italian traders. At first, Pope Clement VII was urged by his advisors to consider this favorite drink of infidels a threat. After he tasted it, however, he succumbed to a perogative that women have relied on for years: he changed his mind. Pope Clement actually baptized the delicious drink, making it an acceptable Christian beverage. No one knows for sure exactly where cappuccino came from, but there are a few sneaky suspicions. The most popular belief is that the drink gets its name from the robes and cowl of The Capuchin Monks habit. How so, say you? Well, read on. The Capuchin order of friars played an important role in restoring Catholicism to Reformation Europe. Its Italian name came from the long, pointed cowl or cappuccino, derived from capuccio, meaning hood. Capuchin was later used as the name (first recorded in English in 1785) for a type of monkey with a tuft of black cowl-like hair. The first use of the word cappuccino in English is recorded in 1948. Whether or not this exquisite beverage was invented by the Capuchin monks is unknown. It is a fact however, that a properly prepared cappuccino of expresso and steamed milk leaves a brown ring along the rim of the cup much like the edge of the monks cowl. (Does this mean there is still hope for the ring around my bathtub to become famous?) Have you ever wondered exactly how Cappuccino is made? Well, the basis for any cappuccino worth its salt (or grinds) is a strong blend of Expresso coffee with added milk or frothy cream topped with chocolate powder. The correct proportions are 1/3 expresso, 2/3 froth. To produce the froth, fill a small jug to 1/3 with fresh milk. Insert the expresso machine-frothing arm to just below the surface and turn on the steam, gradually lowering the jug but keeping the arm in place. Add half of the froth into the expresso coffee and sprinkle with cocoa powder or grated chocolate. Add the rest of the froth and top with more cocoa. (If you do it right, the process might never end.) Cappuccino is more than just a coffee or a flavor or a process. Now one can find chocolate cappuccino cookies and even lollipops that can offer an authentic cappuccino experience even to toddlers! Whether you the drink fancy or plain, with chocolate or cinnamon experience even to toddlers! Whether you take the drink fancy or plain, with chocolate or cinnamon or just plain cocoa powder, cappuccino is a delight that should be enjoyed often. It is unique to the Italian culinary culture and cannot help but force even the most unimaginative among us to contemplate misty Roman afternoons and at least one balmy bistro night! Gardening Can Be Fun

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Linden K. Walhard Gardening is a lot of fun, and it can be even more fun if you have the right tools to do it with. If you are planning a garden, take a moment to learn about the right garden tools so that you will have the tools that will last long and will make gardening more enjoyable. If you have any kind of physical problems, you especially want to use gardening tools that will assist you. If you have a bad back or knees, or arthritis in any part of your body, you don’t want to bend too much. Get good tools and take care of them properly, and they will last forever. When you go to buy garden tools, try them out. Take each one in your hand and make sure the grip is comfortable and it is not too heavy for you. If you find a tool you like but the grip is too small, you can add padding to the grip. Wider handles are usually easier to handle. To determine the material of the tools, you have to know about your garden. Light materials such as aluminum, plastic or carbon fiber are easy to use, but stainless steel is easier to maintain. Stainless steel may not be as sharp as aluminum, for shears, for example. A Rea solution for many gardeners is to buy one tool with interchangeable tool heads. Now they know they have a grip they love, and they can use it for any tool. These tools can also be used as hand tools. When you are buying secateurs or shears, make sure you get a spring action which is not too stiff, to make it easier to use, especially if your hand are not strong or if you have arthritis. Pruners should have an easy cutting action for both thin and thick branches. If you look for a wheelbarrow, don’t get a cheap one that will be turning in every direction. The classic two wheeled one with long handles is the best. For some jobs, your manual garden tools may not be enough. If oi are going to cut a large hedge, for example, you will need a power trimmer. Just make sure you get tools that you are able to handle easily. You have to decide if you can use a corded tool or need cordless because of where the power is on your house. All too quickly your shed will be filled with garden tools, so be careful about what you choose. You will need forks, spades, rakes, trowels and hoes, kept clean and oiled and ready to go. But you may also want seed sowers, a leaf blower, and weed pullers. Is a watering can enough for your needs, or do you need to install a watering system? All of these purchases will be determined by your budget, how much time you have to spend on the garden, and how large a property you have. But make sure you enjoy your gardening. I can give you a lot of joy and be great exercise as well! Being very excited about battery drills, Linden Walhard was publishing various informative papers on this particular topic.
